Dr Olive Wood (O'Reilly, 1909)

Olive Kelynack Wood (O’Reilly, 1909) enrolled at Â鶹ÊÓƵ School in 1905 at the age of 12. Like her sister Susie, Olive was also the Dux of the School. In 1909, along with winning the Dux prize, Olive also won the prizes for Latin and Maths as well as the Old Girls’ Union Prize. She completed Medicine at the University of Sydney and, due to her sister’s efforts, became one of the two first female residents at Sydney Hospital.

During the early 1920s Olive worked as a General Practitioner in her father’s General Practice in Pymble. In 1924, Olive married Rev Wood and had they went on to have six children.

In 1937, Rev. Wood was appointed the Principal of Methodist Ladies’ College (Â鶹ÊÓƵ) in Kew, Victoria, and Olive became the Honorary Deputy Principal from 1939 until their joint retirement in 1966.

Olive and her husband were a formidable team at their school; they expanded the career horizons for the students, they raised the school’s academic standards, enhanced the curriculum, and greatly increased enrolments.

Olive and Rev. Wood were passionate advocates for international peace and reconciliation and vocal opponents of nuclear weapons, the Vietnam War and the White Australia policy. (Rev. Wood was under ASIO surveillance from 1954 to 1972.)

Dr Olive O’Reilly’s calm temperament and wise judgement balanced her husband’s impulsiveness and somewhat authoritarian style; her support was to be indispensable in his ministry and his educational career.

Three of their six children:
• Rev. H. D’Arcy Wood was the President of the Uniting Church in Australia Assembly.
• Dr Elizabeth Wood-Ellem, PhD, was a Historian and Archivist.
• Monica Cresswell Wood, was a famous Australian actress, stage name Monica Maughan.
