Felicity Lemke OAM (Galvez, 2002) Felicity Lemke OAM (Galvez, 2002) was a member of the Australian Olympic swimming team for both the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The 2004 and 2008 Games were not Felicity’s first Olympic experience. In 2000, during the Sydney Olympic Games, Felicity was one of three Â鶹ÊÓƵ School girls selected to be a torchbearer Escort Runner. She was selected in recognition of her hard work and her demonstration of community and School values. Felicity’s swimming career began when she was selected to swim for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Junior School (Kent House) swim team the year she enrolled at Â鶹ÊÓƵ School, Year 6 in 1996. Until this time, Felicity had lived overseas for most of her schooling life. Her Â鶹ÊÓƵ Junior School teachers suggested that Felicity start swimming training, and so she began training at a junior level at Galston Swim Club. Within a year Felicity had made rapid progress and was competing at Metropolitan and State levels. The following year, Felicity progressed to the junior squad under the coaching of an ex-Olympian and increased her training. Her training sessions required great dedication and commitment as they involved a minimum of eight sessions a week starting at 4.30am. This dedication soon paid off – she won the State 100m 13-year-old Butterfly long course title in 1999. She then qualified for the Nationals in Hobart in 100m Butterfly, 100m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle. At the age of 14, Felicity was ranked in the top 5 in the Australian 14-year-old 100m Butterfly event, 8th in 14-year-old 100m Backstroke and 14th in the 14-year-old 100m Freestyle. In 2003, at the Australian Swimming Championships, Felicity won the National Title for the Women’s 200m Butterfly, moving her to 4th place on the all-time Australian list for this event, and at the 2004 Olympic Team Selection Trials, Felicity set personal best times in all three Butterfly events. Her swim in the 200m Butterfly was the third fastest Australian all-time record and more than two seconds faster than she had ever swum the event before. Â鶹ÊÓƵ School’s newly crowned champion was present at the opening of our Aquatic Centre in 2003, flying home from the USA specifically to swim the first lap in the Aquatic Centre opening ceremony. In 2008, Felicity broke both the 50m and 100m short court Butterfly records, and at the 2008 Olympics, she won two Gold medals for the Women’s 4 × 200m Freestyle Relay and the Women’s 4 × 100m Medley Relay. In 2009 Felicity was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to sport as a Gold Medalist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
