Marguerite Sutton (1895) Marguerite Sarah Sutton (1895), enrolled at Â鶹ÊÓƵ School with her younger sister (and future Â鶹ÊÓƵ School Headmistress) Mabel Sutton (1896) on 2 February 1893, aged 15. (Mabel was 14.) After completing her degree in junior school education, Marguerite went on to establish a kindergarten and junior school in Queensland. In 1912, Marguerite Sutton moved to Toowoomba, QLD and opened a Kindergarten to Year 6 junior school at St Luke’s Parish Hall, with an enrolment of six pupils. She owned the school herself and was supported by members of the St Luke’s Parish. As enrolment numbers increased more staff were employed and in1914, Marguerite rented a residence nearby for the accommodation of junior boarders. Marguerite Sutton owned the School until 1921 when she sold it to The Glennie School, a nearby high school. Marguerite remained in sole charge of the junior school, known then as The Glennie Preparatory School, until 1940. In 1930, Queensland’s Governor, Sir John Goodwin, opened a new building for boarders in the grounds beside the high school. This building was named Sutton House. As Headmistresses, both Marguerite and Mabel Sutton made a big impact on their schools and their influence remains today in the brick tributes to them both: Sutton House at The Glennie School, Toowoomba and Sutton House at Â鶹ÊÓƵ School.
